I Hate My Job, But I Have to Pay the Bills - What Can I Do?

Feeling stuck in a job you hate is a familiar situation for many of us. The advice out there by many self help experts is to follow your passion and do what you love, but that's not so easy if you have bills to pay and kids to feed. So if you are stuck in a dead-end job, working all hours, with no time to even think about what you'd actually like to be doing, what can you do to improve your career?

The first thing you can do is take a look at your current job and see what you do to make it more bearable. This might sound counter intuitive, but if you can start to feel a little better about what you are doing now, you'll be in a better mood and have more energy to think about what you'd rather be doing.

So, start out by looking at what you don't like about the job. Are you doing repetitive jobs, which drive you crazy? Can you think of a way to perform these tasks more efficiently, so that you get then out of the way more quickly?

Most companies waste resources and so it shouldn't be too difficult to find some strategies which will help save time or money. And in the present economic situation, employers will to happy to find they have staff who can come up with money-saving ideas.

Can you learn something new? If you are stuck in a rut, your work life will become more interesting if you can pick up a new skill. You can do this formally, by asking someone to teach you or informally by watching those around you and learning from their example.

Alternatively, focus on a skill you already use and decide that you are going to get much better at it. So if you do a lot of typing, decide that you'll improve you speed or learn to touch type, if you are currently using just two fingers.

If you use a particular computer programme, decide that you'll learn some advanced functions, which you don't use at the moment.

Learn about the company or the industry, or both. Choose an area of the company or the industry in general that you don't know much about and find out more. Understanding the bigger picture can help you to see your job in context and make even mundane tasks a little more meaningful.

Even one small change can make a difference; employers like and notice proactive workers and you may be offered additional responsibilities, extra training or even promotion. And if you aren't, you'll be building your skills and experience which will make you the sort of employee other employers want to hire. You can take pride in your new achievements and highlight them on your résumé, which will help you get a new job.
